The population we serve is as diverse as the community we live in. Our clients represent a broad range of cultures, backgrounds, and stages in life, from hard working individuals and families to persons with disabilities and special needs to single parents seeking to improve the quality of life for their families.
Application– Applicant must have completed an application with all documents that is required uploaded or copies.
Interview and verification– The WHA will verify all applicable information according to policy. Once all paperwork has been verified, and if the applicant is found eligible, the status will change from pending to eligible.
Waiting List- The family is placed on the waiting list according to type and size of unit needed, preferences and date and time the application was received.
The time frame varies depending on the number of vacancies and how many people are applying for housing. The waiting list also varies depending on which bedroom size for which you are qualified.
Every applicant is subject to our screening process that includes, but is not limited to a criminal background check and former tenancy history. Applicants that owe a housing authority or any other federally subsidized program funds will not be processed for occupancy. The applicant must pay the funds owed prior to the application being processed. After the application is processed, the applicant must meet all other conditions for occupancy. Repayment of funds that are due, does not necessarily qualify an applicant for occupancy.
WHA does not provide emergency housing.
Your rent is determined by a HUD calculation using a combination of your income minus allowable deductions; the resident pays 30% of their adjusted monthly income for rent.
Rent is due on the first (1st), day of each month. If rent is not received on or before the first business day after the seventh (7th), day of the month, you will be issued a 30-day notice and a late fee of $35.00 is added to your account.
We DO NOT accept cash. Rent must be paid by Money Order or Cashier’s Check made payable to the Housing Authority of Williamsburg. You can pay by Personal Check, Debit, Credit Card or Government Card on our website at www.williamsburghousingauthority.com under the payment portal.
If you are moving out, you must complete a written notice of Intent to Vacate thirty (30) days prior to your moving date.
